EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION TO BUILD A SUSTAINABLE WORLD

WHAT IS PASSIVE HOUSE BUILDING SCIENCE?

The built environment is responsible for over 40% of total carbon emissions that contribute to climate change. In densely populated cities, such as New York, that number reaches nearly 70%.

Passive House is a set of guiding principles for design and construction of buildings to maximize interior building comfort thermally and with the freshest indoor air quality. This is achieved “passively” by using minimal fossil fuel energy to the point that it can REDUCE up to 90% of energy use in a building; contributing significantly toward carbon footprint reduction, while providing healthy, comfortable indoor environments with great resiliency.

WHO WE ARE

Passive House For Everyone! was formed in 2019 with the goal of making energy efficiency as familiar to our youth as recycling. Located in Brooklyn, New York our educational non-profit has pioneered teaching Passive House building science to K-12 students through the creative arts.

Our holistic teaching approach prepares students to be learners for life. Through Knowledge Sharing, Creative Explorations and Hands-On Training of the Passive House building science we’re unlocking the potential of every student to become active agents of change.

Students come away from the workshops with 21st century skills, supporting energy efficiency and clean energy in the building industry, and with a unique understanding of the interlocking concepts of development, social, and environmental justice.

CREATIVE EXPLORATIONS

Our workshop teaches students K-12 the fundamentals of Passive House Energy Efficiency Building Science through creative explorations. Students transform complex ideas about environmental resilience into art, poetry, dance and more. Using a pedagogical STEAM approach, students learn to connect different disciplines, allowing them to think nimbly about our world’s unprecedented environmental fluctuations, and equipping them with the agility to innovate solutions we have yet to imagine.

  • In the Summer of 2022, Passive House for Everyone had the honor of providing Passive House Workshop to three NYC CTE (Career & Technical Education) High Schools: Boys & Girls HS, Transit Tech HS and Westinghouse HS. See The Students Work.

  • Stuyvesant Public High School students put together an abstract dance interpretation of the 5 Passive House principles. This project was transformed midway from a planned in-person performance to finding a way to move forward remotely in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. See The Performance.

  • In spring 2023, the 4th-year architecture students at Pratt Institute took part in the first-ever US collegiate Ice Box Challenge, demonstrating the advantages of Passive House Energy Efficiency Building Science. See The Results.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT

Sponsors enable us to deliver our fun, engaging workshops to the more than 150 NYC public schools who have requested a workshop. Together, we can foster a new generation of environmentally conscious and creative individuals who may one day innovate climate solutions we have yet to imagine.

“It’s not just learning for the sake of learning. It’s learning in order to apply something.”

“It teaches you things that not only you can learn in construction, but life lessons too, with teamwork and patience.”

“This should be taught in Career and Technical Education High Schools. I feel like this would be a good curriculum for everyone.”

-Akin & Seth, Graduates of George Westinghouse CTE High School

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

“I feel that Passive House building principles are essential for our students to learn because they are proven strategies that can improve our individual quality of life and ultimately help to mitigate the negative effects of climate change. Our students enjoyed this experience and you will see that in the various projects they have created.”

- Gillian Beckford, NYC Boys and Girls High School Architecture Teacher

“Passive House [For Everyone] and the strategies that it incorporates are fundamental for my students taking electrical installation and practice. It gives them context as to what they’re doing. They get to see the whole building, not just aspects of it. …This holistic approach that Passive House [For Everyone] takes goes right in hand with the holistic approach that we try to take as CTE teachers.”

- Stephen Hudson, NYC Boys and Girls High School Electrical Teacher

Donate to a Workshop

With over 150 workshop inquiries from NYC schools alone we’re fundraising and fast! Our goal is to eventually provide all workshops free of charge, but at the moment we can only have capacity to host a few pro bono workshops a year. A Workshop Donation goes directly to reducing this cost to schools and like our sponsorship packages is completely tax deductible.
